The Ann M. Wilkinson Nurse Psychotherapist Award

About the Award

The second annual Ann Wilkinson Nurse Psychotherapist Award will be given at our Chapter Meeting in at our State-wide Conference on April 27, 2013. 

 

The Ann M. Wilkinson Nurse Psychotherapist Award will be granted to active and/or new Advanced Practice Nurses: Clinical Nurse Specialists in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing or Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners who are working in private practice directly with clients, utilizing psychotherapy as their primary treatment modality. The nurse’s clients may be individuals, groups and/or families; adults, children or adolescents. Medication management and additional therapies may also be a part of the practice but must be in addition to psychotherapy. 

Awards will be granted to current members of APNA, California Chapter, based on a review of their formal request, in writing. The written requests will be blind-reviewed by a 3 person panel including the two members designing the award, Kathryn Johnson and Marlene Nadler-Moodie and a member of the Chapter Board of Directors appointed by the Chapter President. 

The Awardee will agree to write a brief article for the Chapter NetLetter within six months of receiving the award describing how he/she has utilized the award.

The awardees may utilize the funds for such things as, but not limited to:
     *Seed money to set up a private office
      *Supervision sessions
      *Continuing education which is psychotherapy focused.

Awards will be in amount of $500 each

Please consider a donation to this award so that we can continue to honor Ann Wilkinson, to support our members that are in private practice, and to support the advancement of nurse psychotherapy.

Donations must be made by check to “APNA California Chapter” with “Ann M. Wilkinson Award” written on the memo line of the check.  Donations should be sent to:

The funds for the award will be kept in the APNA California Chapter account, earmarked specifically for this award by the Treasurer. A report of the funds will be offered to the Board of Directors at the same time as the Treasurer Report is made. As a 503c organization, the donations are tax deductible.

Provide the following information in 1-2 pages and submit via email to California Chapter Treasurer, Suzane Wilbur:  swilbur55@aol.com   Include your name, email,  home address and phone number AT THE TOP OF THE APPLICATION. Applications will be blinded before being sent to the review committee. 

1)   Please summarize your psychiatric nursing education and experience

2)   Briefly tell us about your current practice setting

3)   Describe your current use of psychotherapy

4)   If selected, how would you use award money


 

 

Ann Wilkinson was a nurse psychotherapist, former president of the APNA California Chapter, and a dedicated advocate for psychiatric nursing over many years. She was a mentor to many, and a savior to her patients. After her passing, the Ann Wilkinson Award was set up by her good friends and fellow California nurses, as well as her family to honor her commitment to the role of the nurse psychotherapist.

First winner for the Ann Wilkinson Award in 2011

 The first award was given at our Chapter meeting during the APNA National Conference in Anaheim in 2011 to Ann Bispo, a Nurse Psychotherapist in private practice in Northern California.  Upon receiving the award, Ann said that she felt honored to have won, and that she would use the money to enhance the practice of nurse psychotherapy.1. Ann is a clinical nurse specialist practicing in Monterey, CA.
